“Tehran will support Damascus under any circumstances,” stated the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, receiving the visiting Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Mostapha Miro. Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that supporting the Intifada of Palestinian Muslims is the Islamic, humanitarian and historical duty of all Muslim countries, the Arab states in particular.
Saying that the region was going through a new and crucial test, the Leader underlined the need for regional countries to be alert and noted that solemn and practical measures should be taken to support the oppressed people of Palestine.

Observers described President Fidel Castro’s welcome to President Mohammad Khatami as “unprecedented”. In a trip to the Caribbean region, the Iranian President not only attended the OPEC Summit in Caracas, Venezuela, but also paid an official visit to Havana. The meeting was an opportunity for both presidents to reiterate their commitment to common objectives on dismissing a monopolar world, while exploring various areas of partnership between Iran and Cuba.

Enhancing an Alliance

President Mohammad Khatami’s meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on the sidelines of the Doha Summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference clearly enhanced a two-decade alliance between Tehran and Damascus, and paved the way for further expansion of cooperation as called by both sides.
The common stance of Iran and Syria vis-à-vis several regional developments is rooted in intellectual bonds as well as identical views that dismiss intervention of external elements in the region.

A Handshake, A Smile, An Understanding

No one will forget how Italy and Iran broke the ice in landmark visits initiated by the then Prime Minister of Italy and President Khatami. As Tehran and Rome continue their determination to expand relations in all levels, Luciano Violante, Italy’s President of the Chamber of Deputies, paid an official visit to Iran and met with a number of top state officials including President Mohammad Khatami.
The visit was significant given the decisive role that Italy’s Chamber of Deputies plays in setting the country’s policies.
