| Practical Measures for Support |
Tehran will support
Damascus under any circumstances, stated the Leader of the Islamic Revolution
Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, receiving the visiting Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed
Mostapha Miro. Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that supporting the Intifada of Palestinian
Muslims is the Islamic, humanitarian and historical duty of all Muslim countries, the Arab
states in particular.
Saying that the region was going through a new and crucial test, the Leader underlined the
need for regional countries to be alert and noted that solemn and practical measures
should be taken to support the oppressed people of Palestine. |
Saluting a Commitment |
Observers described
President Fidel Castros welcome to President Mohammad Khatami as
unprecedented. In a trip to the Caribbean region, the Iranian President not
only attended the OPEC Summit in Caracas, Venezuela, but also paid an official visit to
Havana. The meeting was an opportunity for both presidents to reiterate their commitment
to common objectives on dismissing a monopolar world, while exploring various areas of
partnership between Iran and Cuba. |
Enhancing an Alliance |
President Mohammad
Khatamis meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on the sidelines of the Doha
Summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference clearly enhanced a two-decade alliance
between Tehran and Damascus, and paved the way for further expansion of cooperation as
called by both sides.
The common stance of Iran and Syria vis-à-vis several regional developments is rooted in
intellectual bonds as well as identical views that dismiss intervention of external
elements in the region. |
A Handshake, A Smile, An Understanding |
No one will forget how
Italy and Iran broke the ice in landmark visits initiated by the then Prime Minister of
Italy and President Khatami. As Tehran and Rome continue their determination to expand
relations in all levels, Luciano Violante, Italys President of the Chamber of
Deputies, paid an official visit to Iran and met with a number of top state officials
including President Mohammad Khatami.
The visit was significant given the decisive role that Italys Chamber of Deputies
plays in setting the countrys policies. |
