Dr. Hamid Derakhshani, a craniofacial surgeon, is founder and Board Chairman of SUPA Medical Devices. “I could write a book with all facts and details
supported by documents,” he says on his experience of SUPA’s establishment, growth and accomplishment.

Dr. Derakhshani recently shared with Iran International some of his memories on the company’s emergence as well as his vision for the future approach of Iran’s unrivaled manufacturer of medical devices. His last sentence revealed the hope and determination that built SUPA Medical Devices: “I have always believed that a strong will goes a long way. When there is a will, there is a way.”

SUPA started with 69 products, today it manufactures 600 products.

Sixteen Years Ago: It was in 1985 when I was recommended to engage in production of medical devices. On those days, Iran was at war and under sanctions. Therefore, local production of medical devices was regarded as a vital necessity. It was a challenge that I welcomed with open arms.

Building from Scratch: The giant project of SUPA Medical Devices was proposed to the state and took time to be reviewed and pass through several administrative formalities. The draft plan was finally approved as one of the major projects of the Islamic Revolution. The project was giant and back-breaking. We had to build a high-tech factory where there was nothing but a deserted land with 8% of slope. It took time, effort and sacrifices. Every night after my medical practice, I spent time way past midnight with different contractors on the progress of their individual areas.

Miracle of Simultaneous Engineering: We had a deadline and I was determined to finish the job on time. The countdown started and I did not hesitate to put the inauguration date on the envelopes. It was on the promised date of February 11th of 1989 that SUPA, the 146th grand project of the Islamic Revolution, was inaugurated thanks to untiring efforts and simultaneous engineering initiatives. The renowned complex that is now called SUPA Medical Devices took 22 months to be completed and it was owing to our approach of “simultaneous engineering”.

I do not pay a single penny on royalty. It means paying someone else to confirm that he knows better than we do.

Ahead in Standardization: Once production had started, the factory was on the road of gradual development. As the next step, standardization came on agenda. The first standard system SUPA aimed at was Total Quality Management (TQM) from Switzerland. Later, our factory succeeded in securing an ISO 9001 certificate from Switzerland for executive methods. I am pleased to say that SUPA’s achievements led to quality assurance certificate of Conformity European (CE Marking) from the reputable BSI (British Standards Institute).

From 69 to 600: SUPA started with 69 products, today it manufactures 600 products. I do not pay a single penny on royalty. I don’t believe in it. It means paying someone else to confirm that he knows better than we do.
Such remarkable creativity in production means that SUPA is prepared to look overseas. To diversify our national revenues, we must all be export oriented. SUPA has set up representative offices in UAE and Ukraine to boost sales in the region. However, we hope to see state support to overcome hurdles on the way of exports.

Secrets to Success: SUPA operates based on two pillars: First, the fundamental of Science, Competence and Intelligence. SUPA is a team where everyone follows one established culture based on a higher vision. Our philosophy draws on constant improvement, and that is why our company welcomes constructive criticism.
The second pillar is Research and Development. R&D is the origin of progress, the source of success. Every factory needs to have a dynamic R&D department.
The remarkable diversification of our products would be no more than a dream without continuous research and development.
In a bid to eradicate bureaucracy, every operation in SUPA must be paperless. This itself promotes science and knowledge. It also requires infrastructure, computer software and hardware. Once you create all these elements, development will come true.

Need for Renovation: We must reconsider our organizations, their existence, their functions, and their operations from day one. Our traditional task-oriented approach must be replaced with procedure-oriented approach. When there is no task involved; workers are only required to complete the process. This alternative approach will define all administrative strategies.
