Another Iranian went global on November 26, 2001, as
Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization presented the award of the
Worlds Outstanding Scientist in 2001 to the veteran Iranian meteorologist, Dr.
Mohammad-Hassan Ganji.
Moving up the Ladder: Mohammad-Hassan Ganji was born in 1912 in Birjand, Khorassan
Province. Having completed his elementary and high school education in his home province,
Ganji moved to the capital where he took under graduate courses between 1929 to 1933.
Later in 1933, he moved to England in pursuit of academic studies. To complete his
doctoral studies and obtain a Ph.D. in geography and climatic sciences, Ganji also
traveled to the United States.
Founder of Iranian Meteorology: Dr. Mohammad-Hassan Ganji
was the pioneer instructor who introduced Modern Geography as one of the academic
disciplines of Iran. He spent thirty-seven years (1938-1975) lecturing on Geography in
Tehran University before retiring with honors in 1975.
In his academic career, Dr. Ganji moved as an instructor to vice dean of the college. As
for the professional career, he served for twelve years (1956-1968) as the head of
Irans Department General of Meteorology. At the same time, Dr. Ganji held the
position of director of the Asian Region at the Meteorological Organization for a period
of four years.
Publication of several books including the Atlas of Iranian Climates as wells as over a
hundred of articles in Farsi and English are among the works of this veteran
meteorologist.
Appreciation: In recognition of his life-long efforts, the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) decorated Dr. Mohammad-Hassan Ganji as the outstanding scientist of the
world in 2001. The ceremony was attended by Secretary General of the World Meteorological
Organization, Minister of Roads and Transportation Ahmad Khorram, and head of the Iranian
Meteorological Organization. The award included a gold medal, a certificate of merit and a
check.
