Iranian Carpets off to American Homes

Export of goods to Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania increased by 80% during the past year, but those destined for Europe fell by 9.5%.

Exporters of hand-woven carpets, exported Iranian carpets to 101 countries during the past Iranian calendar year (ended March 20, 2003). A report issued by Iran Customs Administration stated that out of total Iranian carpet exports, 24.2% were exported to the United States of America.

Based on the report, the United States was followed by Germany, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Switzerland, Canada, France, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, which accounted for 23.7%, 10.5%, 7.4%, 4.5%, 4.3%, 4.2%, 2.8% and 1.7% of Iranian carpet sales, respectively. In terms of value, about 85% of the Iranian hand-woven carpets were exported to the above 10 countries. It should be noted that 20.4 tons of hand-woven carpets valued at $517.3 million were exported, down by 4.1% in terms of weight and by 0.9% in terms of value compared to the preceding year.

Iran’s non-oil exports, which accounted for 72.4% of total exports, were mainly sent to Asian countries. Asia was followed by Europe, the Americas, Africa and Oceania by attracting 20.7%, 4%, 2.6% and 0.3% of Iran’s non-oil exports, respectively. Export of goods to Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania increased by 80% during the past year, but those destined for Europe fell by 9.5%.

According to the report, non-oil exports to member countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) valued at $2.46 billion, accounting for 53.5% of total non-oil exports. Non-oil exports to member countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) declined by 2.1% in 2002 as compared to the preceding year.
