Negotiations between Iran and Kuwait for
the annual export of 300 million cubic meters of fresh water from Karkheh
River to Kuwait have become final.
Iranian Energy Minister Habibollah
Bitaraf stated that after finalization of bilateral talks a draft agreement
had been drawn up, which will be implemented as soon as the text of the
contract is approved by Parliament (Majlis).
"Annual supply of 300 million cubic
meters of water to Kuwait would be carried out from surplus resources of
Karkheh River and subsequent revenues would be used for the implementation of
water supply and distribution projects in Khuzestan province," he said.
He noted that water transfer from Iran
to Kuwait has been painstakingly studied by both countries’ experts and the
project was economical.
With regard to electricity exports to
Iraq, the minister also stated that an Iraqi delegation had negotiated with
the Iranian sides for purchasing electricity, as well as electrical equipment
and commodities needed by their oil industry and the two countries had reached
an agreement in principle for supplying power to border areas and providing
Iraq with technical and engineering services.
The minister noted that implementation
of the general agreement depended on the follow-up by both countries’ expert
delegations and signing an agreement on the subject.
