Khuzestan Petrochemical Company

Khuzestan Petrochemical Company has created more than 500,000 person-hours employment in the engineering sector and more than 8 million person-hours labor in domestic construction and installation sectors.

Implementing Engineering Polymers Project

Khuzestan Petrochemical Company implements the engineering polymers project that was initiated in 2000, the test production of which started in October 2003.

Khuzestan Petrochemical Company is the first complex producing two prominent examples of engineering polymers in the Middle East; that is, polycarbonate and epoxy resins. The engineering polymers project started with purchasing technical know-how from Germany’s Salzgiter Company and detailed designs as well as construction and installations operations were carried out by Iranian specialists.

The project’s feed is imported phenol and acetone and the contract for importing the said substances will soon be signed at the Special Economic Petrochemical Zone. Meanwhile, chlorine and caustic soda will be supplied by Bandar Imam Petrochemical Complex.

All design and engineering phases of the project were carried out inside the country and Iranian contractors also implemented construction and installation operations.

Khuzestan Petrochemical Company is to produce 35,000 tons end product per annum through complicated processes comprising 25,000 tons polycarbonate as well as 10,000 tons of liquid and solid epoxy resins which enjoy high added value and are used in many industries.

Due to their high mechanical strength, high resistance to shock, and high transparency as well as the ability to absorb various colors and resist different climatic conditions, polycarbonates are widely used in automobile industries for manufacturing dashboards and accessories, bumpers, internal car panels as well as glass covers of car lights.

They are also used for manufacturing compact disks (CDs), digital video disks (DVDs), covers for swimming pool ceilings and greenhouses. Polycarbonates are used in military industries to make resistant glass for the windscreen of fighter planes as well as bulletproof glass.

Sanitary and medical industries use polycarbonates for manufacturing transparent bottles for packaging foodstuff and medicines, various kinds of medical and industrial glasses, optical lenses with different colors, dialysis instruments, endoscopy, blood transfusion as well as needle-less ampoules.

Another product of engineering polymers is epoxy resins that are widely used for coating pipes in oil and gas industries to prevent corrosion and are also used for producing paints, floor covers and polymer concrete, which are of great importance in constructing buildings and bridges.

Technology used by ‘base phenol A’ and ‘epoxy resin’ units of Khuzestan Petrochemical Company, is licensed by Poland’s ICSO Company and technical know-how for the polycarbonate unit belongs to a Russian joint stock company which has been presented after minimal changes by Germany’s Salzgiter Company.

All design and engineering phases of the project were carried out inside the country and Iranian contractors also implemented construction and installation operations. A large part of equipment for the project have been made by domestic manufacturers including more than 6,500 tons of metal structure, storage tanks, processing towers, as well as electricity panels and cables.

Project Investment: Total investment in the project has been mentioned at $191 million and 600 billion rials. The forex part of the project was supplied as finance by Noyvallesina Company through Germany’s BHF and Italy’s BCI banks while the rial part was supplied by the National Petrochemical Company.

Job Creation: Khuzestan Petrochemical Company has created more than 500,000 person-hours employment in the engineering sector and more than 8 million person-hours labor in domestic construction and installation sectors. On average, more than 1,000 people per day have been employed in pre-commissioning and commissioning stages of the project.

When operational, the company will create more than 400 direct jobs while more than 5,000 people will be employed in downstream industries related to Khuzestan Petrochemical Company.

The huge engineering polymers project of Khuzestan Petrochemical Company was officially inaugurated by President Mohammad Khatami on June 22.
