Karbasian Elected Badminton
World Federation Board Member


This is good news for Iran especially because the country has lately lost some seats in Asian and world sports scenes.


Dr. Mehdi Karbasian was unanimously elected a member of the Presiding Board of the Badminton World Federation for the third time.

According to the official website of the Badminton World Federation (BMF) and the National Olympic Committee the election was held in Kuala Lumpur in which the president, vice-president and members of the Council board of the federation were elected and introduced for a period of four years.

According to the report, in the election session representatives from 140 world countries with 270 voting rights were present. Iran's nominee (Dr. Mehdi Karbasian) in a tough competition with 30 candidates for presence in the presiding board won the race by scoring 244 votes.

It should be noted that Denmark (Mr. Paul Eric) with 145 votes was elected the president of the Badminton World Federation for a period of four years. Indonesia with 120 votes was his main rival. Meanwhile, Peru (Mr. Gustavoo) with 148 votes against 118 votes of his competitor (USA) was elected the vice-president.

Karbasian is the treasurer and a member in the executive board of the National Olympic Committee of Iran who has been elected member of the presiding board of the Badminton World Federation. This is good news for Iran especially because the country has lately lost some seats in Asian and world sports scenes.

It should be noted that Dr. Mehdi Karbasian held chairmanship of the Badminton Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran for a period of 21 years from 1989 to 2010. From 1997 to 2011 he was vice-president of the Asian Badminton Confederation and founded the Badminton Confederation of West Asia with the membership of 17 countries with Iran as it headquarters.

Some 160 countries and national federations are members of the Badminton World Federation which is based in Kuala Lumpur. Countries have a vote on the basis of active badminton players. For example, Indonesia and China each has five votes, Iran three votes and many other countries have one vote. Indonesia, China, Malaysia, South Korea, Denmark and Britain are among the top badminton players of the world.

The election for the presiding board is held every four years when the president, vice-president and members of the board are elected. This year Dr. Mehdi Karbasian was elected for the third time.
