Published in 2000, Religion and Intellect Trapped in
Tyranny is a book by President Seyed Mohammad Khatami which draws on two lectures by
the author in 1994 and 1995.
Introducing the book, the President writes in the preface:
| A Survey
of Political Thought among Muslims during the High and Low of Islamic Civilization |
The book mainly discusses the
political thinking of Muslims throughout twelve centuries. However, the content is based
on a theory that I have never seen in the form presented herein. And that is, after the
thirty-year rule that followed the unique ways of Prophet Mohammad (S.), politics in the
Muslim world has only been governed by tyranny. Muslim or not, all philosophers agree that
this is the worst type of politics. All in all, tyranny has practically been the most
common form of politics practiced in all times and places. Even today, one can see the
international community somehow oppressed by practices that have roots in tyranny.
I believe that political power has been the root cause behind the refusal from
political thinking in the Islamic world following (the scholar) Farabi, and governance of
a kind of Sufism on the mentality and literature of many Muslims. Oppression, corruption
and lies have been the main drives behind this political power.
Muslims suffered irreparable damage since their religion and intellect became
trapped in tyranny. The ironical fact is that the Holy Book of Islam, more than anything,
stresses on wisdom and intellectuality, and that a true faith must be based on these two.
Absolute power and authority, practiced by any entity other than the Almighty, is a
blatant indication of blasphemy. |
